Fair Votes referendum

Have just Attended Nick Clegg’s excellent speech in Leeds city centre in support of a yes vote in the Fair Votes referendum in May on changing the voting system to the Alternative Vote: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12504941.

He was speaking following the passage of the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act on Wednesday night.

The room in the Carriageworks Theatre was packed.

The Deputy Prime Minister spoke with conviction and passion. This change, he said, would put politics back in the hands of the people. It would be fairer, much fairer than the existing first past the post system. Politicians would be more accountable.

The questions were thoughtful and in answering each one Nick Clegg drove home how the change would strengthen our democracy and be better for the whole country and all the communities within it.
