St George’ Day

Happy St George’s day! And, belated happy birthday to William Shakespeare too.

I agree with celebrating, well, at least marking, St George’s day, and rescuing the saint from the right wing politicians and racists who subvert and misuse his memory and symbols. St George was Asian and so would be denied entry to these shores if the racist right who bandy his name and flag had their way. He is honoured by Muslims, especially in Palestine where a village is named after him in Arabic and his relics are in one of the many St George’s churches.

So, St George represents multi-culturalism and reconciliation between Christians and Muslims. Who can doubt that he belongs to the mainstream and not to the evil racist right?
